Ventilated big bags

Bulk bags with ventilation keep potatoes, onions and wood fresh and dry. Air passes through strips of open weave in the fabric, so moisture leaves the bag instead of spoiling the goods.

Quick facts

  • Ventilation strips woven into the PP fabric
  • For potatoes, onions and wood
  • About 2 m high for 1,000 or 1,250 kg
  • Open top or skirt, optionally from leno fabric
  • Closed bottom or large-diameter outlet spout

A ventilated big bag is an FIBC made from woven polypropylene fabric with ventilation strips, bands of open weave that let air circulate through the bag. It is used for packing potatoes, onions and wood, which release moisture after harvest or during drying. In a bag made from closed fabric that moisture cannot escape and the goods spoil; in a ventilated bag it leaves through the strips. DIV Trades weaves the ventilated fabric in its own plant in Serbia and usually makes these bags about 2 m high to hold 1,000 or 1,250 kg.

How ventilated fabric works

The body fabric is woven with alternating closed bands and open bands with holes between the tapes. The closed bands carry the load, while the open bands let air in and moisture out across the whole height of the bag. Compared with a conventional bag the goods stay dry, which is essential for potatoes and onions in storage and for firewood that must season before sale. Top options for ventilated big bags

Drawing of a big bag with an open top

Open top

The usual choice for potatoes, onions and wood: fast manual or machine filling, maximum air exchange at the top.

Drawing of a big bag with a top skirt and ties

Top skirt

A skirt with ties closes the top for transport and keeps dirt out. Optionally made from leno fabric for additional air circulation.

Bottom options for ventilated big bags

Closed bottom of a woven big bag

Closed bottom

Standard for wood bags and common for potato and onion bags. The bag is emptied by tipping or cutting.

Outlet spout with large diameter

For potatoes and onions a wide outlet spout allows controlled discharge into hoppers or sorting lines without bruising the produce.

All other variants from our filling options and discharging options are possible on request.

Dimensions, SWL and loops

Ventilated FIBC are usually around 2 m high so that 1,000 or 1,250 kg of potatoes, onions or wood fit into one bag at their relatively low bulk density. Four corner loops are standard; see lifting options. The bag is tested for its SWL at a safety factor of 5:1 or 6:1 like every other DIV Trades bag; see SWL and SF and dimensions.

Tip for storage

Ventilated bags work best when air can reach the bag from all sides. Leave space between bags in the warehouse and avoid wrapping them in foil, which would block the ventilation strips.

What are ventilated big bags used for?

For potatoes, onions and wood, including firewood. These goods release moisture, and the open ventilation strips let it escape so the product stays dry and does not spoil.

How big is a ventilated big bag?

Usually around 2 m high, so that 1,000 or 1,250 kg of produce or wood fit into one bag. Other dimensions are made on request.

Which top and bottom are typical?

An open top or a top skirt, and a closed bottom or an outlet spout with a large diameter. Wood bags usually have a closed bottom.

Can the skirt be ventilated too?

Yes. The top skirt can be made from leno fabric, an open mesh weave, to add air circulation at the top of the bag.

Is the ventilated fabric made by DIV Trades?

Yes. DIV Trades weaves ventilated PP fabric in its own weaving plant in Bačka Palanka and also sells it as a technical textile.
